Studying in Linz

University

The Johannes Kepler University (JKU) is one of the younger universities in Austria. The university started with both teaching and research programs in Social Sciences, Economics and Law in 1966. In later years followed programs in Technical Studies and Sciences. At the moment the campus has more than 14,000 students and more than 2,000 employees.

Location

Its location in the Suburb Urfahr, at the Northeast side of the city of Linz, gives the JKU a Campus character, with many students enjoying the green areas to meet up in particular in summer. The JKU can be very well reached with public transport and through the Motorway by car (parking space available at the university). Because of its campus structure, most of the student houses are only 10-15 minutes walking from the university.

Lodging

In the direct neighbourhood of the university there are several student houses, equipped both with single and double rooms, at reasonable prices.

To obtain a place in one of the student houses, students should enrol until a deadline (see the different student houses) directly at the student house. Normally it is no problem to get housing.

Board

At the JKU there is a Mensa belonging to the campus. Every day two fresh prepared warm meals are offered. For the guests of the Mensa, who prefer to compose their own meal, there is also a Mensa-market with soups, fruit, salads, pizza, pasta meals, grilled meals and many drinks. Besides this opportunity two student houses - Julius Raab Heim and KHG Heim - also have their own Mensa. Apart from the food in the different Mensa, there are also some supermarkets, doctors, pharmacies, banks and small shops and pubs in the direct neighbourhood of the university. The city centre of Linz can be quickly reached (15 minutes) using the tram, where one can find the shopping street Landstrasse.

Leisure

Because of its location at the border of the city of Linz, there are many leisure areas in the direct neighbourhood of the university. The brinks of the Donau invite you to many sports and leisure activities like cycling, skating, running, Nordic walking, volleyball, soccer, etc. In the direct surrounding of the university you can also find the Pleschinger See. Moreover, the Universitätssportinstitut offers a wide ranging course program, which will motivate you in particular to learn to practice a new sport.

Life at campus

The Student representatives organize meetings on campus on a regular basis. Almost every week there is a Mensa party (Thursday evening), where you can enjoy good disco music at student friendly prices. Moreover, there is Lui, a bar in the university building, which invites to sit together on comfortable couches. Besides that there is a whole range of places from local pub, fairs and cinema evenings till special meetings, like for example performances of the Austrian comic Josef Hader.

Outside of the university campus, downtown Linz offers something for everybody.

Linz - European Capital of Culture 2009
