TERMIN FÜR DIE NACHKLAUSUR:

15.01.2009, HS 2, 17.15 bis 18.45 Uhr

MARKS  (incl. marks from the exam on the 15th January 2009)

This course covers the main topics of Human Resources Management focussing on the principles of modern Personnel Economics. The main aim of the course will be the discussion of economic (analytic) methods that can explain personnel decisions and organizational structures of firms. Topics covered include recruitment decisions, compensation systems, evaluation and promotion strategies, turnover of workers, downsizing, team work, performance pay, training, etc. Throughout the course possible solutions for motivational problems as well as for problems of asymmetric information and coordination are discussed.

The course is based exclusively on literature by faculty members of the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, which provides a highly reputable Master of Business Administration Program (MBA).

Main book:

Lazear, Edward P.: Personnel Economics for Managers, Wiley, 1998 (copies available)

Edward P. Lazear has pioneered the field of Personnel Economics, he has been teaching courses at the Graduate School of Business at Chicago and at the Stanford Business School. He is also a highly respected scholar in Labor Economics and the Founder and editor of the Journal of Labor Economics, the most prestigious journal for Labor Economics.

Please make use of the list of misprints in Lazear's "Personnel Economics", collected by Ben Kriechel Download

Supplementary Reading:

Baron, James N. and David M. Kreps: Strategic Human Resources – Frameworks for General Managers, Wiley 1999.

Milgrom, Paul and John Roberts: Economics, Organization and Management, Prentice-Hall, 1992.

Both books are recommended as background reading. The Baron/Kreps book is more inter-disciplinary with a larger focus on organizational, psychologic and sociological issues. The Milgrom/Roberts book is also more broad in scope, but has a very nice coverage of compensation systems.

The course is part of the Special Economics Programme “Industrial Economics, Business and International Economics”, but is also recommended to students of “Personalwirtschaft”, “Organisationsforschung” and “Internationales Management”.

Power point slides (check for updates before every lecture) are available in the KUSSS.

This course has first been offered in WS 01/02 by Rudolf Winter-Ebmer.
